Overview

KAU Little League endorses the National Little League philosophy, and has made only slight modifications to some of the playing rules in an attempt to enhance the playing experience for our children. The following is an excerpt from the National Little League organization:

Eligibility

KAU Little League is open to residents or students in both the Unionville-Chadds Ford and Kennett Consolidated School Districts. The Little League Program is designed for players of all skill levels and age groups. Our priority is to develop fundamental baseball skills while demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship.

Our Divisions are organized to introduce increasingly competitive play for each age group. For the youngest players, day games are scheduled…and as they move up in the league, they experience the thrill of playing games “under the lights!” (mainly Minor A and Majors).

Little League Structure

Major Division:

All 12-year olds and advanced skill 11-year olds. Approximately half of the games are played on the traditional 46/60’ Little League field with the balance of the games on the larger 50/70’ field. Experience on the larger field prepares the players for the jump to the 60/90’ dimensions of a high school field.

Minors Division:

All games are played on 46/60’ field in the following age groups.

Minor A: All 10-year olds and 11-year olds who do not play in the Majors Division. This is a ‘kid pitch’ division.

Minor B: Age 9. This is a ‘kid pitch’ division.

Minor C: Age 8 (and advanced 7-year olds). This is a ‘kid pitch’ division except there are no walks. If a pitcher throws four balls, then the coach finishes the pitches to the batter.
7-year olds can qualify for this division if they demonstrate required pitching skills.

Minor D: Age 7 (and some age 6). This is a ‘machine pitch’ division primarily for 7-year olds. Six-year olds who have at least one year of T-ball experience may play in the Minor D division.

T-Ball Division:

For Ages 4, 5 and 6-year olds who are first-year players.

Regular Season and Post-Season Divisional Tournaments

Minors and Majors teams will play approximately 12-16 games during the Regular Season, which will end near June 1st. KAU then holds  Post-Season Divisional Tournaments for all teams. The Post-Season Tournament lasts usually two weeks, and the two most successful teams advance to the Championship Game. Each player on the Championship and Runner-Up teams receives a Post-Season Tournament trophy. All other participants receive medals.

Regular Season Team Rostering Principles and Procedures
Each season, KAU conducts player drafts to choose teams in a manner that gives every team an equal chance of succeeding throughout the Regular Season.
Our draft process relies on the results of pre-season evaluations. At these evaluations, each player will be assigned a skill rating from 1 (least skilled) to 5 (advanced player). Assessments will be made by independent evaluators for pitching, fielding and hitting.
In advance of the player drafts, all Managers will have access to the ratings for each player. In order to provide adequate playing time for each player during the Regular Season, KAU’s goal is to draft 11-12 players per team. See “Evaluations” and “Draft Process” links for details.

Selection of Regular Season Managers

Anyone interested in managing or coaching during the 2012 Regular Season should indicate as such when registering their son or daughter. In addition, we are requesting that all prospective Managers and Coaches attend a general membership meeting on Monday, January 16, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Kennett Square. Details on the Manager Selection Process will be shared at that meeting.

KAU All-Star Teams
KAU’s Post-Season “All Star” teams are selected according to the process shown in the “All Star Selection Process” tab on the KAU website. As such, these teams are nominated and selected by Regular Season Managers and Coaches based on demonstration of outstanding play and sportsmanship during the Spring Regular Season. The “All Star” teams compete in a District 28 tournament at the end of June/early July and, if successful, have the opportunity to compete in state, regional and even national and international competitions of Little League International.

KAU Travel and Tournament Teams
KAU offers the opportunity for advanced players to play on a travel team (KAU Knights) designed to complement the recreational baseball season. Confusion can arise from the fact that the KAU Knights’ teams and their selection are different from the end of season ‘KAU All Star” teams and selection process. There are teams for 9, 10, 11 and 12-year olds. Participation is open to any player who is of the appropriate league age, has a residence within the KAU league boundaries and is registered for the 2012 Spring Regular Season. Due to limited roster sizes, tryouts are necessary and will be held in late March or early April (details will be published in January). The tryouts consist of on-the-field demonstration of fielding, base running, pitching and hitting skills. Most games for the KAU Knights will be on weekends and will not interfere with Regular Season KAU game and practice schedules. There also may be opportunities for the KAU Knights to play in tournaments during the Spring and Summer. An additional fee of approximately $100 per player is required to participate on a KAU Knights team.

Challenger Division

KAU has sponsored a Challenger Division for over 15 years. The fundamental goal of Challenger Baseball is to give children and young adults with disabilities an opportunity to play baseball. Every player bats each inning and every player plays the field. Strikes and outs are not counted. Everybody scores and everybody wins. Players are assisted by young, non-disabled volunteers, who, when needed, help with batting, fielding and running or pushing a wheelchair around the bases. The Challenger Division plays a 9 game schedule, mostly on Sunday afternoons.
